Tinder's Turnaround Just Posted Its First Good Number in Years

The number that's been missing for three years

Tinder registrations went up last quarter. Only 1% year-over-year, but Global Dating Insights reports that Match Group is calling it the first registration increase in "many, many years," and treating it as proof the Tinder turnaround, led by CEO Spencer Rascoff since February 2025, is finally landing.

The rest of the scorecard is still red, just less red. Monthly active users were down 7% year-over-year last quarter, an improvement from a 10% decline the quarter before, according to Match Group's own Q2 disclosures. Daily active user declines narrowed to 4%, the best showing in ten quarters. Rascoff has said he expects DAU growth to turn positive "any day now," which is either a confident prediction or the kind of thing a CEO says every quarter until it happens to be true.

What Match Group actually changed

The interesting part isn't the headline number, it's what's supposedly driving it. Match Group says algorithm changes account for roughly two-thirds of the recent engagement and retention gains, more than any single feature launch. That's a notable admission for a company that spent the last two years bolting on AI tools, video modes, and astrology matching.

The features aren't nothing, though. Double Date, which lets two friends match as a pair against another pair, is reportedly being used by 1 in 4 Gen Z women in the US. Tinder Events, the in-app tool for discovering local meetups, is expanding from its Los Angeles pilot to 26 cities worldwide by the end of September, and TechCrunch reports that 71% of Tinder's active LA users aged 18 to 24 have already engaged with the Events tab. Roughly three in five non-Tinder users told the company events would make them more likely to try the app, which is the kind of number that makes a product team keep funding a feature.

None of this is charity. Match Group has been under pressure from activist investors since before Rascoff took the board seat, and the strategy reads like a company trying to prove it can grow Tinder without just spamming push notifications. Match Group's own Q2 results show net income up 36% to $171 million even as revenue dipped 1%, so the turnaround is, for now, more about efficiency and retention than about pure top-line growth.

Hinge is quietly the bigger story

While Tinder inches back toward flat, Hinge keeps compounding. Per that same Q2 report, its European markets have grown revenue 100% year-over-year for three straight quarters, and the app is already the No. 2 or No. 3 dating app in Mexico. Match Group has said it wants Hinge to hit $1 billion in revenue by 2027. If Tinder is the turnaround story, Hinge is the one that never needed one, and it's increasingly doing the heavy lifting for Match Group's overall numbers.

The company has also been diversifying beyond its two flagship apps: it bought HER, the dating platform for queer women, and put $100 million into Sniffies, the map-based app for queer men, which now claims about 3 million monthly active users of its own.

Why this is worth watching, not just Match Group's earnings

A 1% uptick in registrations isn't a comeback. It's a company that spent three years shrinking finally finding the floor. But if Tinder's algorithm rework really is behind two-thirds of the improvement, that's a bigger deal than any single feature launch, because it means the product got better at matching people rather than just better at getting them to open the app one more time.

If you're one of the people whose Tinder habits have shifted during all this product churn, whether that's more matches, fewer replies, or a longer gap between the two, your own export tells that story better than any earnings call. RizzStats' upload page turns your Tinder or Hinge data into your own match rate, reply rate, and activity timeline, so you can see whether the algorithm changes actually changed anything for you.
